Buying Local in Fall: Beyond the Cider Mill

Most Michigan people have made their annual pilgrimage to either their favorite cider mill or pumpkin patch. Tis the season, right? What most people don’t realize is that it is meat season as well. Now is the best time to stock the freezer with locally grown beef, pork, late-season broiler chicken, and that soon to be devoured treat of turkey. I highly recommend contacting the numerous Michigan farmers who participate in responsible and sustainable practices such as smaller, grass-fed only herds and flocks. You will enjoy a higher quality product, free of hormones and steroids and at less than retail prices. Also, we encourage you to explore the many late season vegetables that are of plenty such as squash varieties, potatoes, brussel sprouts, nuts, and apples. Buying local stimulates our state economy and opens a direct relationship with the hard-working men and women who hold true to the art of growing nourishing food. Do your research first, as not all farms are equal.

Buying Local: The Series

We have begun writing a multi-part series handling questions often asked by Michigan residents. We will demonstrate to you how you can buy local, receive a premium product but above all-save money! Further, we will discuss the economic, environmental, and social impact that buying local has on our state. This series will provide insight directly from farmers, economists, and retailers. Look for the first installment to arrive in November.

Notable MiMM Changes

We have launched our newsletter again after a hiatus to get it all together. Expect the newsletter to regularly arrive in the middle and at the end of each month. If your friends have signed up for it but are not receiving it, remind them to look in their SPAM folder and add us to their Safe Senders or Contacts list. Also, we have changed the MEMBERSHIP page to make it easier for new guests to sign up. We take your suggestions and put them into action. Premium business members can expect to see an expansion in their membership with the forthcoming addition of the MiMM Marketplace to display their products.
